Summary: Digital room keys in AXP (Alliants Experience Platform) allow guests to use their smartphone as a room key by storing a secure digital credential in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, which communicates with the door lock via NFC (Near Field Communication) or BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy).
Permissions Required: Roles required in AXP to perform this action are Front Desk Staff, Brand Administrators, IT Teams.
How Do Digital Room Keys Work?
Overview
Digital room keys transform the guest experience by allowing them to bypass the front desk and go directly to their room using their smartphone. When a digital key is issued through AXP, the guest receives a secure credential on their mobile device that works just like a physical key card β they simply hold their phone near the door lock to unlock it. Digital keys are more convenient for guests, reduce front desk queues, and provide enhanced security through automatic expiration and remote revocation.

How the Guest Experience Works
Understanding how digital room keys work from the guest's perspective helps your team support guests effectively.
Step 1: Guest Receives the Key
When a digital key is issued, the guest receives a notification on their phone. The key is automatically added to their Apple Wallet (iPhone) or Google Wallet (Android).
Step 2: Guest Unlocks the Door
The guest holds their phone near the door lock. The phone communicates with the lock using NFC or Bluetooth, and the door unlocks if the credential is valid.
Step 3: Key Expires Automatically
Digital keys are configured to expire at checkout time. They can also be revoked remotely by staff if needed.
Supported Devices and Lock Systems
